Mexico’s Tourism Revenue Soars by 36.3% in 2024

Mexico experienced a significant boost in international tourism revenue during the first half of 2024, with a 36.3% increase compared to pre-pandemic figures from 2019, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).

US$16.2 Billion in Revenue Generated

In the first half of 2024, Mexico’s tourism sector generated an impressive US$16.2 billion, an increase of US$4.3 billion over the same period in 2019. This also reflects a 6.9% rise compared to 2023 figures. Despite the revenue growth, international tourist numbers decreased by 1.1%, with 236,324 fewer visitors compared to 2019.

Tourist Spending Increases

While fewer tourists visited, their spending rose. The average expenditure per international visitor in the first half of 2024 reached US$744.50, up by 0.5% year-over-year and US$200 more than in 2019.

June 2024 Sees Continued Growth

In June 2024, Mexico recorded a 2.9% increase in international arrivals, welcoming 3.6 million tourists, up from 3.5 million in June 2023. Tourist spending during this month totaled US$2.3 billion, a slight 0.9% increase from the previous year. However, the average spending per tourist dropped by 2%, amounting to US$639.40.

Uneven Recovery Across Regions

Despite overall growth, some regions, such as Bajio and Northern Mexico, have yet to recover fully to pre-pandemic levels. However, the tourism sector’s contribution to Mexico’s GDP increased by 7.4% in the first quarter of 2024, driven primarily by domestic tourism and services.

Optimistic Projections for International Flights by Year-End

Mexico’s Minister of Tourism, Miguel Torruco, has projected a strong year-end with over 35.6 million seats available for international flights into Mexico. North America is expected to account for 78.5% of these flights, with American Airlines and Aeroméxico leading the market by offering nearly 10 million seats between them.

Mexico’s Airline Landscape

National Airlines

Mexico’s airline industry is dominated by key carriers offering both domestic and international routes. Aeroméxico, the flagship airline, boasts an extensive network covering North and South America, Europe, and Asia. Meanwhile, low-cost airlines Volaris and VivaAerobus have gained popularity due to their affordable fares, primarily servicing routes within the Americas.

Regional Airlines

Beyond the national airlines, Mexico is served by several regional carriers that operate on specific, often less-traveled routes. While Interjet previously played a vital role in regional connectivity, recent struggles have limited its operations. However, smaller airlines like Calafia Airlines and Aeromar continue to offer essential services to niche markets, particularly in regions such as the Baja California Peninsula and southern Mexico.

Top Airports Driving International Air Traffic

Three major airports—Cancun, Mexico City International Airport (AICM), and Guadalajara—are expected to accommodate 70.4% of international flights by the end of the year, accounting for 25.2 million seats.

Mexico’s Airports: Key Hubs for International and Domestic Travel

Major International Airports

Mexico’s primary international gateways include Mexico City International Airport (MEX), the country’s busiest airport and a crucial hub for international and domestic connections. With over 25 airlines operating, MEX connects travelers to more than 100 destinations across the Americas, Europe, and Asia. In 2022, it served 46.2 million passengers, and the number is projected to reach 48.4 million in 2023.

Other key airports include Cancún International Airport (CUN), which handles a large portion of Mexico’s tourism traffic, particularly for the Riviera Maya, and Guadalajara International Airport (GDL), which serves as the primary entry point for western Mexico.

Regional Airports

Mexico’s regional airports also play an essential role in the country’s aviation landscape. Tijuana International Airport (TIJ), near the U.S. border, offers the unique Cross Border Xpress terminal, facilitating seamless travel between Mexico and the U.S. Monterrey International Airport (MTY), Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR), and Cabo San Lucas International Airport (SJD) are also key players, catering to both domestic flights and international connections to popular tourist destinations.
